Book Review: The Truth about Twinkie Pie
The Truth about Twinkie Pie, by Kat Yeh
YA Fiction
The Truth About Twinkie Pie is a delightful read about growing up, family secrets, and fresh starts, and it's as light and fluffy as the cover image suggests.
The story is about GiGi, who never knew her mama but with the help of her sister, DiDi, keeps the woman's memory alive through her recipes.
After winning a cooking contest, the two sisters move from a trailer park in North Carolina to an apartment in New York City. This "Recipe for Success" is what DiDi has has always wanted, but GiGi hates leaving the only home she's ever known.
As she begins to make friends of her own, though, and breaks away from DiDi's controlling ways, GiGi begins to learn more than she thought possible about herself and the mama she never knew.
The story is heartwarming and touches on love, loss, sacrifice, and what it means to be a family. I found the characters both truthful and unique. There are also recipes included at the end of many of the chapters, so I was able to try my hand at making mini Twinkie Pies (without the vanilla wafers), and I found the recipe to be very straightforward.
